What is 304L stainless steel grade

Type 304L stainless steel is an extra-low carbon version of the 304 stainless steel alloy. The lower carbon content in 304L minimizes deleterious carbide precipitation as a result of welding. Consequently, 304L stainless steel can be used ‘as welded’ in severe corrosion environments and eliminates the need for annealing. However, this grade has slightly lower mechanical properties than the standard 304 stainless steel grade.

Stainless Stee 304L is a austenitic, which has a minimum of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Grade 304L has a carbon maximum is 0.030. It is the standard “18/8 stainless”. Stainless steel 304L is the most versatile and widely used alloy in the stainless steel family. Ideal for a wide variety of home and commercial applications, Stainless Steel 304L exhibits excellent corrosion resistance and has a high ease of fabrication, outstanding formability. The austenitic stainless steels are also considered to be the most weldable of the high-alloy steels and can be welded by all fusion and resistance welding processes.

Uses of 304L stainless steel grade

304 ss grade is especially suited for all types of food processing equipment – Food processing equipment, particularly in beer brewing, milk processing, and wine making, Architectural trim and molding, Automotive and aerospace structural use, Construction material in large buildings, Chemical containers, including for transport, Heat exchangers, Nuts, bolts, screws, and other fasteners in the marine environment, Dyeing industry, Woven or welded screens for mining, quarrying & water filtration. 304 ss grade is also used for the dye tanks, pipelines buckets, dippers, etc. that come in contact with the lormic, acetic, and other organic acids used in the dyeing industry.
